I can’t go to Taco Bell, I’m on an all carb diet!

It’s been way too long since I’ve posted here. There has been so much going on that I’ve been distracted. I made a big career change that I’m super excited about and got some much needed rest over for the holidays. I also had the chance to catch up with friends and make some new ones too. With the New Year just hours away, a lot of people are setting goals and thinking about what they want to do better in 2018. Many are trying to exercise more or eat healthier.

Those are awesome goals but I’m focused in a different direction. For me, 2018 will be about moving my career along. I used to do all my coding lessons on my work laptop because it was newer than my personal laptop. I am planning to get a new Mac with my tax return so I can keep up with my progress. If you have any recommendations, I am all ears! I want to keep picking up new skills so that one day I can achieve my goal of owning my own business.

As I mentioned before, I made a big career change. I start my new job on January 8th! It is a complete industry change as I am no longer in the nonprofit sector. I am excited to start doing Business Development for a local business. This is a great opportunity for me to learn new skills, pick up some new ones, and MAKE MORE MONEY!!!

Sometimes I think about what a huge shift it is and start to doubt myself. What if I can’t do it? What if I don’t learn fast enough? I’ve decided I’m not going to let self doubt rule me. It’s true, I could fail. BUT I could also succeed and that’s a risk worth taking. I choose to believe in myself. I’m going to kick butt just wait and see. What big risks are you taking in 2018?

what if I fall

I don’t get this.

Okay I missed practicing yesterday so I’m making it up today. It was nice to be practicing in the office for a change. My favorite part about my office is having TWO screens!! I don’t know how people function with just one. It’s so much more convenient this way. I watched this great, short video from Rebecca Minkoff on Women@Forbes that was very motivating. It was a tad distracting though. In the future, I should probably stick to my Spotify Classical Music routine.

I’m totally off schedule and totally lost. Python is legit confusing. There’s way too much math in this lesson and not enough explanation. I need Python For Dummies. Is that a thing? It should be. There’s so much talk about Control Flow and Comparators it makes my head hurt. Oh and there’s a Boolean Order of Operations and the equations aren’t always real equations. Sometime’s there’s a ton of if’s, and’s, not’s, and elif! Which, BTW, mean “else if.” Because that’s a proper term now apparently.

I dont get this

I’m thinking I’m going to have to find a supplemental course or lesson on Python so I can wrap my head around this. Sorry to be so negative this post but I am truly frustrated. I am determined to figure this out. It’s tough this course isn’t coming as easily as the HTML but if it were easy everyone would do it right?

It’s a crazy last week or so. I missed blogging last week but I still did my coding! I’m all bundled up in my office since it is a cold day…. FINALLY! I am so ready for winter. I even have a Christmas music playlist from Spotify running. It makes me feel warm inside. Anyway, here’s what I’ve been up to: I completed the Intro to HTML on Codecademy and started the session on Python.

It’s been fun learning something new but Python is definitely tougher to handle than HTML. I don’t know how Britney did it while singing AND dancing! But seriously, I don’t think it’s the Python that’s actually tough but rather the way the lesson is written. Whoever created that course wasn’t quite as clear cut as the creator of the HTML course. I’ll definitely be mentioning that in my survey when I complete it. Then again, maybe it is me. So far in the course it’s been a lot of using Python to do math, not my strong suit.

Thankfully, it transitioned to strings fairly quickly. That was a nice break for my brain. String methods are much clearer for me. I like things to be straightforward. Tomorrow, I will get back into it and hopefully, with less distractions, I can feel more confident. My goal is to post again here tomorrow to feel on track again. I’ve faced some setbacks recently that have completely thrown me off my routine, not just with coding and this blog, but everything. Do you have any tips on how to overcome obstacles? I am open to suggestions.

Why are you so obsessed with me?

After a very productive morning/early afternoon of work, I decided to take a little break to practice on Codecademy because after all.. it’s Wednesday. And on Wednesday’s we code! I got all set up in a local Starbucks with my venti green iced tea with no sweetener (no one needs too much added sugar in their life) and the Ryan Gosling “Hey Girl” notebook I take notes in. It was fun bumping into a couple I knew but I immediately plugged in my earphones, turned on the Classical Essentials playlist on Spotify and got to it.

On today’s agenda: tables! It was actually really fun and pretty straightforward. I was initially a little apprehensive as tables aren’t generally my forte on other mediums but HTML was, dare I say??? Easy! If you’ve been nervous about getting started with HTML, thinking these elements would too difficult, you might be surprised. You can style your tables using CSS so that previous lesson came in handy. I really like the overall flow of the Codecademy course. It really puts things in an order that make sense and pay off as you progress through the course. I don’t work for Codecademy or get paid by them in any fashion btw. I’m just a fan. Should this blog become monetized in any way, I will be transparent about that in posts. I don’t foresee that happening but just in case.

Anyway, while plugging away at my lesson, a man came into the Starbucks and stared at me right away. Initially, I thought nothing of it. I figured he must be here to meet someone but he continued to stare as he waited for his drink and continued as he, rather quickly, drank 2 hot coffees. Thankfully, he left without speaking to me but he made me so uncomfortable. Why do men do that? He wasn’t even young, he was probably old enough to be my dad! It’s so creepy and weird. Have you ever had an experience like that, where you’re just minding your own business, having a lovely time then some creeper ruins it? Yes, I was in a public place but that doesn’t mean I’m here for public consumption. One of my favorite things about working in a Starbucks or coffee shop (I often do so due to the nature of my job), is that while everyone pretty much keeps to themselves, there is a nice sense of community. This totally jacks it up. It’s not something I am going to let ruin my day but it just irked me so I thought I’d share it.

Well that’s all I’ve got for today. My battery life is running low so I better run so it doesn’t die before I can publish this. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to share!why-are-you-so-obsessed-with-me-gif-10

I’m a mouse, duh.

So I’m not actually a mouse, duh….. I’m a Horned Frog! I am originally from California and moved to Texas after high school. Just in time to discover the greatness that is Texas Christian University.

I graduated 5 years ago and have been working in the nonprofit sector for 3 years as a fundraiser. My job requires a wide variety of skills including event planning, volunteer management, marketing, and some light website editing. Over the course of my work, I have become more interested in the more technical aspects. Recently, I decided to indulge my curiosity and pick up some new skills.

Thanks to some awesome ladies in a Facebook group I am a member of, I learned about Codecademy. I started taking an Into to HTML and LOVE it. I’ve also completed a beginners course on Google Analytics. I’ve felt lucky to have that Facebook group to share my triumphs and challenges with them but want to more. I started this blog to have a chance to share my journey learning new things and navigating my career. I hope you follow along, enjoy, and share with friends!
